Project Summary:

I was hired by a new Startup called ‘DataSafe’ that is a data protective software company.  They are dedicated to protecting their users from the most common forms of data loss, including ransomware, accidental deletions, and natural disasters.  The founders wanted my help in building their branding and finding their voice.  My primary goal was in answering two questions and then working from there.

  1. Who are your users?
  2. What is your voice and what kind of feelings do you want your company to invoke?

Users: This question always leads to more questions.  Who is the primary demographic?  Are we creating a product that we want to appeal to the masses or a specific group of people? : Ultimately, we resolved that our goal was to appeal to the masses but to direct much of our style and messaging on men and women ages 22 – 50.

Voice: Many modern tech companies are designing content that is very visual and illustration heavy.  We resolved that we liked that direction and we wanted to embrace some of the playfulness that we have been seeing in similar spaces.  As a result of this conversation, I brainstormed and came up with a visual aid to showcase the goals of the software (to protect your data) and came up with some creative ideas to showcase the sorts of adversaries my clients’ software would be protecting users from.

I developed the sketched prototype below.

Voice:  This was an interesting conundrum because we wanted to establish a brand that was approachable and modern.  Traditional software companies tend to lean towards green, blue, and white, and we wanted to leave that convention behind and try something a little different.  So we went with a visually calming yet eye-catching green, yellow, and purple palette.

Our goal was to make data protection software approachable and comprehensible.  Below is the landing page that I designed, illustrated, and provided the written content for.

My clients also wanted me to create a signup form to greet users when they arrived on the site.  The form is designed to encourage users to sign up for a free trial and/or to request a demo of the product.  The branding is consistent with the landing page, including a person holding a phone wearing more vibrant color options that align with the branding.

Below is a closer look of all of the illustrations created for the landing page.
